itsme® is a mobile digital identity app that lets people prove who they are online without passwords or card readers. Used by nearly 8 million people, it has become one of the everyday ways Belgians log in, pay and sign — a single, trusted app that replaces a drawer full of card readers, tokens and forgotten passwords.
One app, four things
With itsme and a single PIN or fingerprint, you can:
Register — create a new account or subscribe to a service in one tap, sharing details like name, address and phone number.
Log in — prove who you are securely, with no usernames, passwords or card readers.
Confirm transactions — approve a transfer, payment or order, with the details laid out for each confirmation.
Sign — sign documents electronically, with the same legal value as a handwritten signature.
It works the same way at more than 1,000 companies, platforms and public services — banks, insurers, telecoms and government among them.
Built on trust
Three things make that possible. Ease of use: every action is smooth, recognisable and identical wherever you use it. Security: multi-factor technology and encryption protect every action. Privacy: nothing happens without the user's permission, and it's always clear what's being shared and with whom.
The challenge
An identity app carries a different weight from most software. Millions of people rely on it every single day to reach their bank, their insurer and government services, so it has to be dependable and secure without exception. Strong authentication and encryption have to live on the device while staying effortless to use; electronic signatures have to hold real legal value; and privacy has to be built in, sharing only what a given action needs and only with consent. All of this has to feel identical across hundreds of partners, several countries and multiple languages — and on iOS specifically, it means careful use of device security and biometrics, working reliably across a wide range of devices and OS versions, and meeting a very high bar for reliability and code quality.
My role
I work on the itsme iOS app as a freelance iOS developer within the mobile team, building and maintaining the native iOS experience alongside the rest of the team.
Outcome
itsme is one of Belgium's most widely used digital identity apps — nearly 8 million users and more than 1,000 partners across banking, insurance, telecom and government — and it continues to grow internationally, including in the Netherlands.
